1850 - Socrates Hotchkiss Tryon, pioneer settler, established a donation land claim at the south end of the canyon.

1855 – Tryon Dies at Age 39 of sciatic rheumatism


1869 – Frances Tryon gave her 645 acres to Socrates Jr., his sister, Sallie, and Sallie's husband, A.A. Cleveland.

1874 – Socrates Jr. Sold the land to Oregon Iron Company for $7,000, or $10.85/acre.

1874 – 1890’s – Oregon Iron Company utilized the land for logging cedar and fir, timber used for foundry in Lake Oswego, Old Iron Mountain Trail was a major logging road.

1900 – Forest fire in upper canyon, charred snags still visible along the Center and Big Fir trails.

1912 – 1915 – Logging continued, The Boone’s Ferry Wood and Tie Company had a site located in the area which is now Alfred Street.  A sawmill and steam donkey engine were located near what is now Beaver Bridge.  The steam donkey engine remained until 1960 until removed for sewer line that was built along the creek.
