Nature Day Camp 2009

Join us for another amazing summer at Tryon Creek! We offer half day camps with songs, walks, and nature crafts for preK-1st grade. Full day camps for children entering 1st through 5th grades include forest explorations, games, and science experiments. And Overnight camps for grades 5th though 8th include overnight trips to other campsite, canoe trips and more.

If a camp of interest is full, we encourage you to still register for the class and be placed on our waitlist. Obviously there is no guarantee that a space will become available but waitlisted campers generally are able to get into camp.

Nature Discovery Camp

Awaken and build upon your child’s natural curiosity and affection for living things in this introductory camp.  Whether it’s feeling velvety-soft leaves, smelling crumbling bark or looking for birds high in the trees, campers will use their senses while exploring the forest.  Activities include observing animals, sensory explorations, songs, games and crafts.

Explore the plants and animals in the park!  In small groups that foster flexibility and on-on-one attention, campers will discover the rich diversity of species in Tryon Creek State Park .  Activities include stories, songs, games, science experiments and crafts.

Full Day (1st - 5th)

Earth Cycles- Up, Down and All Around

Discover an exciting world hidden under fallen logs.  Explore the lush trails as you wind your way down towards the creek.  Mornings will be spent with the same small group, hiking along the trails, exploring the many cycles that are at work in the forest.  Each afternoon, campers choose from a variety of activities offered in two sessions, such as science experiments, forest games, sensory explorations and nature-based arts and crafts activities.

Adaptations to Survive- Feathers, Fur, Thorns and Bark
Grades 2,3,4

Why do blackberry bushes have thorns?  How do birds fly? How do beavers stay dry in the water?  Each day begins with a small group hike while campers discover the special adaptations of a unique forest plant or animal.  In the afternoons, campers select activities in two sessions with options such as drama, forest games, microscopes, expedition hikes and arts and crafts.

Natural Communities- Maps, Legends and Survival
Grades 3, 4, 5

Where is the best place for a shelter?   What natural resources does your territory have?  Each small group will spend mornings choosing and exploring their own territory in the park.  Campers will create maps and legends while learning how ancient peoples lived in the area.  Skits, songs and games will build cohesion among each group.  Other activities include a survival game in the meadow and their choice of several activities offered in the afternoons.  This camp is intended for older students who are ready for a more in-depth exploration of Tryon Creek State Park .

Learn about edible and medicinal plants!  Explore plants here at the park and journey to a nearby farm to collect fresh local produce.  Spend one day canoeing and another camping out at Tryon Creek State Park and cook a delicious meal using local food.

Life of a Stream
Canoe trip and Thursday overnight
Grades 5, 6, 7

Explore the journey of Tryon Creek from its headwaters to the Willamette River .  Investigate stream life and conduct water quality tests.  Learn about a different waterway on a canoe trip.  On Thursday, campers visit a fish hatchery then camp overnight at Milo McIver State Park on the Clackamas River .

Forest Ecology
Thursday backpack overnight

Click here to Register

Explore hidden areas of Tryon Creek and visit the oldest trees in the park.  Examine the plants and animals that make up the forest community and create your own plant journal with local species.  On Thursday, backpack into an old-growth forest on Mt. Hood , cool off by the creek, tell stories and learn the basics of low impact camping.

Camp Policies and General Information

Registration Instructions: Our system registers a single camper for multiple sessions of the same camp (example; session 2 and session 4 of adaptations).

If you would like to register a camper for two different camps (example; one adaptations camp and one communities camp) you would register your camper twice, one for each camp. The system should remember information you typed in from the first registration.

If you have multiple children to register, you would register each camper separately.

Waitlist

If a camp of interest is full, we encourage you to still register for the class and be palced on our waitlist. Obviously there is no guarantee that a space will become available but waitlisted campers generally are able to get into camp.

Age/Grade Level

Extended Care

Extended care is offered from the hours of 8-9 am and 3-5 pm for full day and overnight camps. Charge is $5/hour, per day, per child. Preregistration is required.
Note: There is no extended care at 1:00pm for the half day camps.

Staff

Our staff are enthusiastic, dedicated, experienced individuals who are professionally trained in camp skills, outdoor education, and child development. They come to us with excellent teaching skills and a strong sensativity to the needs of children. All of our staff are required to be CPR/FIRST AID certified and have passed a background check conducted by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.

Payment Options

Day Camp registrations are processed on-line. On-line registration goes live Monday, February 9, 2009. If you are not able to register your child or children in this manner, please let us know and we will do everything we can to help you with the registration process.
