Matthew Tucker Cartwright
Lecture: April 20, 2008
I like to explore how various materials and shapes can be used to express new and different forms. One example is manipulating the mechanical geometry of a bike rim to create an unexpected organic form of a helix. With the Natural Cycles Installation I see an opportunity to explore the use of organic material and shapes to create a geometric and architectural structure on a grand scale.
Matthew Tucker Cartwright builds functional art, sculpture and custom furniture through Cartwright Design, with an emphasis on innovative design and creative use of materials. His public artwork can be found in Oregon and Colorado. Cartwright completed two years of mechanical engineering at Colorado State University (Fort Collins) and took numerous art and architecture classes at the University of New Mexico (Albuquerque) and Portland Community College.
