This program integrates nature exploration, art, literature, music, movement, and outdoor play. Story and stroll is a FREE program geared toward families with young children (preferably ages 2-6) but all are welcome.

Celebrate the longest day and shortest night of the year by going on an evening guided walk in the park. We’ll talk about what creates seasons, cultural celebrations for summer solstice from around the world, and discover the highlights of the forest this season.
This is a free event for all ages.

Join The Friends of Tryon Creek as we work to connect people with nature in order to preserve and protect it! Pull together to remove invasive English ivy and to protect our forest. Ivy out competes our native plants, covers tree canopy stopping photosynthesis, takes over the forest floor and ruins precious habitat.
- Registration is not required but please call ahead with groups of 5 or more
- All minors must be checked in at the NatureCenter with their minor’s insurance form signed by a parent/guardian (can be found on our website)
- Anyone under 14 MUST be accompanied by a parent/guardian
- Gloves and a light snack provided
- Please bring your own water bottle
- Please dress for the weather, to get dirty, and to be off trail (sturdy shoes and long pants are strongly suggested)
We usually need to hike at least 15-20 minutes to get to the spot where we will be working.
Venture out with a park guide for a free, nature hike to explore the forest and stream ecosystems and natural history at Tryon Creek State Natural Area. Topics will vary from week to week but will be appropriate for all ages. Parents must accompany kids on all hikes. No groups please– if you are interested in bringing a group please call ranger at least two weeks in advance to make arrangements for alternate time.

Fun for kids ages 6-12! Join a park ranger and learn how you can help protect our natural resources, plants and animals. Participating in nature games, nature crafts and park explorations will help Junior Rangers earn their badge and patch! We strongly encourage parents to participate in the program with your children. All parents must sign a permission slip before children participate.
This is a free event for ages 6-12. No registration is necessary.

Over the hills and through the woods we go. Follow the course of the Tryon Creek watershed as we stop off for brief tours of restoration sites. All about canine carnivores; learn about coyotes and foxes as we discover how to track these elusive nocturnal creatures. After our hike we’ll play some fun tracking games and enjoy the campfire with S’mores for dessert.
Cost: $6/person (non-member), $5/person (member), pre-registration is required.
One of nature’s most spectacular events takes place daily at Tryon Creek as day turns to night and the familiar becomes the mysterious. Join a ranger for an hour and a half dusk hike to discover the creatures of the night and explore their nighttime senses. From owl exploration and bat chats to sensory hikes, there is something for all ages in this weekly summer hike.

Join a Park Naturalist for Morning Guided Walks at Wapato Access Greenway on Sauvie Island. These informal walks will focus on the local natural and cultural history, a peek at the rare oak savannah habitat and beginner birding basics. They will occur the last Saturday of each month.
This is a free program. The trail around Virginia Lake is approximately 2 miles long. Appropriate for ages 8 and above.

To reach Wapato Greenway parking lot travel from bridge onto the island, continue north on Sauvie Island Road, past the intersection with Reeder Rd, past Ferry Road boat ramp turnoff, until the marked parking lot on the left.
