18th Annual Daryle Seil Tall Tale Contest
“Why Crayfish Swims Backwards”
For grades K through 6th
Young writers, come celebrate nature by writing about, “Why Crayfish Swims Backwards”. Use your creativity, observations, and personal research to write an imaginative tale or fable.

Lots of basic info, jokes, and some pictures. Better for older students (4th grade and up). Pertains to NW species and also covers invasive crayfish in the NW. Pertains to NW Species and also covers crayfish capture regulations.
WRITING CONTEST RULES
- Write an original short tale or fable about “Why Crayfish Swims Backwards”. We encourage both humorous and serious stories.
- Entries should be no longer than 250 words. Longer submissions will receive lower marks in judging.
- The story must be the student’s own work.
- Please type or use very neat hand writing.
- One entry per author. Teachers please send us your top 5 submissions but let us know how many students wrote stories. Everyone submitting a Tall Tale will receive a Tall Tales thank you bookmark.
- Each entry must include the student’s name and grade in the upper right hand corner on the front.
- Each entry also needs the name, address, city, zip, and phone number of the student along with the name of his or her teacher, school and an appropriate contact e-mail on a separate page, attached to the entry. We need this information in order to contact winners and to send all participants a Tall Tales thank you bookmark.
- Please keep a copy for yourself.

JUDGING
All stories are reviewed in categories by grade. Depending on number of entries, some categories may contain more than one grade. Entries will be judged by volunteers from the Education Committee of the Friends of Tryon Creek.
