Morning Bird Walks at Wapato Access Greenway
8:00 am – 11:00 am

Join a Park Naturalist for Morning Guided Walks at Wapato Access Greenway on Sauvie Island. These informal walks will focus on the local natural and cultural history, a peek at the rare oak savannah habitat and beginner birding basics. They will occur the last Saturday of each month.

  • Appropriate for all ages.
  • Bring your binoculars, a water bottle, and expect to have a great time.
  • This event is free to the public
  • Registration is required.

  • To reach Wapato Greenway parking lot travel from bridge onto the island, continue north on Sauvie Island Road, past the intersection with Reeder Rd, past Ferry Road boat ramp turnoff, until the marked parking lot on the left.

Stewardship Saturdays
9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Pull together to remove invasive English ivy and to protect our forest. Ivy out- competes our native plants, takes over the forest floor and ruins precious habitat. Fourth Saturdays may be trail maintenance.

Registration is not required. Please carpool if possible. Gloves and a light snack provided, but please bring your own water bottle. Please dress for the weather as we work rain or shine.

NOTE TO PARENTS/GUARDIANS: All minors MUST be checked in at the Nature Center.  All minors 14 and under MUST be accompanied by an adult.

 

Guided Nature Walks – Amazing Amphibians
10:00 am – 11:30 am

Venture out with a park guide for a free, nature hike to explore the forest and stream ecosystems and natural history at Tryon Creek State Natural Area.  Topics will vary from week to week but will be appropriate for all ages.  Parents must accompany kids on all hikes.

No pre-registration required. No groups please– if you are interested in bringing a group please call ranger at least two weeks in advance to make arrangements for alternate time. For more specific information, call (503) 636-9886 ext. 225 

Nature Discovery Days
10:00 am – 1:00 pm

For a special last Saturday treat, wander into one of our brand new classroom discovery days.  We’ve got bones, animal pelts, live animals (including our new corn snake Pockets), and all sorts of other cool stuff we want to share with you.  Each session will have a specific theme, but it’s not a structured program so you can come and go as you please.

Morning Bird Song Walks

From beginners to advanced birders, anyone who is fascinated by the sounds of birds should take advantage of these guided walks lead by Audubon/Tryon Volunteers Rick and Stephanie Wagner.  Each day of the week visit one of the metro area’s prime spring migration hot-spots; beginning with Tryon Creek on Mondays.  By starting with the earliest trips you can become familiar with the songs of the common resident species and then keep pace with the migrants as they arrive.

This is a free program recommended for ages 10 and above. No registration is necessary.

Stewardship Saturdays, every Saturday!
9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Join The Friends of Tryon Creek as we work to connect people with nature in order to preserve and protect it! Pull together to remove invasive English ivy and to protect our forest.  Ivy out competes our native plants, covers tree canopy stopping photosynthesis, takes over the forest floor and ruins precious habitat.

  • Registration is not required but please call ahead with groups of 5 or more
  • All minors must be checked in at the NatureCenter with their minor’s insurance form signed by a parent/guardian (can be found on our website)
  • Anyone under 14 MUST be accompanied by a parent/guardian
  • Gloves and a light snack provided
  • Please bring your own water bottle
  • Please dress for the weather, to get dirty, and to be off trail (sturdy shoes and long pants are strongly suggested)

We usually need to hike at least 15-20 minutes to get to the spot where we will be working.

Junior Ranger Program – Nature Journaling
1:00 pm – 2:30 pm

Fun for kids ages 6-12!  Join a park ranger and learn how you can help protect our natural resources, plants and animals.  Participating in nature games, nature crafts and park explorations will help Junior Rangers earn their badge and patch!  We strongly encourage parents to participate in the program with your children.  All parents must sign a permission slip before children participate.

This is a free event for ages 6-12. No registration is necessary.
