Discover how to transform your outdoor space into a thriving, low-maintenance, climate-resilient habitat for native bees, birds, and other wildlife! Amy Stout from Friends of Tryon Creek and the Backyard Habitat Certification Program will provide an introduction to native gardening and the components needed to turn your property into a sanctuary for wildlife and people alike. Learn about naturescaping (a method of landscaping that focuses on planting a majority of native plants), the Backyard Habitat program's certification criteria, and how your efforts can improve air and water quality, support pollinator populations, and help you foster a deeper connection to nature right from your own home. (Don't have space to garden? Learn how even container plants can support local wildlife and make a difference!)
Following Amy's presentation, you're invited to tour the Library's gold-certified Backyard Habitat, as well as another certified private garden close to the library for inspiration! Volunteers and staff will be on hand to answer questions about the Backyard Habitat program, the Library's Backyard Habitat garden, native plants, and the LOPL Seed Library, which includes a native seed collection.
This program is open to seasoned gardeners and beginners alike. We hope to see you there!
